Art in Words—A Journey of Creativity

A good maintenance day is often the boost you need to spark up your glow because there is absolutely no reason to go around looking like your problems. Where do I even begin? It’s so exciting! From new braids that sting, dragging your scalp just enough to make your face pop by force—leaving just enough room for you to still breathe without a throbbing headache; to new lash extensions that immediately doll you up—just enough to still see properly, or the prettiest nail set with lovely French tips—just enough to… still type well?

Not quite.

In fact, I’m currently struggling as I type because I keep missing the words with these nails I have on. But hey! I’m not complaining because I’ve been itching to write to you—dearest creatives, especially the participants of the storytelling ‘Art in Words challenge.’

I know you’ve been anxious, waiting, expecting— I (we) know you may have questions, or maybe you simply just want a follow up. You want to know what’s up? Fine, relax… sips coffee. I’ll give you the gist.

You know one thing I love about storytellers? It is their ability to make magic out of something that may have seemed so insignificant at first glance. They see the stories untold, feel the emotions unfelt, tread the territories uncharted, and evoke a tale from within. Then suddenly, you realise the thing you initially overlooked wasn’t so mundane after all — and that, in fact, is the beauty of a storyteller. The power to create a story… and sell that story. Plus, with up to a $1000 prize up for grabs, a story will actually come out by force; add an opportunity to be part of a big creative agency? Come on now — the perks are endless.

If there’s one thing the Getlit Art in Words Competition has projected so far, it’s that storytelling will always find a way to shine—irrespective of the medium, the moment, or the muse. When we launched this challenge, we hoped to spark something. We hoped people would bring their voice, and weave magic out of a single artwork. What we didn’t expect was the volume of creativity, the bold interpretations, and the poetic vulnerability of every single storyteller who stepped forward.

So far, it has been nothing short of inspiring.

Over the past weeks, we’ve watched contestants from different places and background bring depth, humour, mystery, and pure imagination into 90-second videos. And honestly? We are incredibly proud.

This competition wasn’t just about winning a prize — it was about creating space for storytellers. A space for creatives to express themselves, experiment their art and allow their stories be seen and heard. We wanted to make sure the journey didn’t just end there at the deadline of the entries— so we hosted two intimate storytelling masterclasses for our participants and opened it to the public because we are very mindful and we know it. Both sessions were rich, practical, and deeply insightful, and many of our participants shared how these conversations opened their minds, elevated their approach to storytelling, and gave them a wider sense of what their craft could become. And that—more than anything—made the entire experience worth it for us.

If we’ve managed to inspire even a handful of people to believe in their art a little more… then that’s already a win for us at Getlit Africa.

We are excited for this final stretch, as the judging period commences. We’re looking forward to celebrating the winners, highlighting the best stories, and showcasing how powerful storytelling truly is. To every contestant so far — we see you, we thank you, and we are rooting for you. Whether you win or not, we hope this challenge gives you something meaningful. A spark, a little nudge, or a reminder to keep telling your story.

This competition is only the beginning for us — and hopefully, for you too.

Love,

Fefe.
